Don't dwell on the book, the usual advice that people have, or what other people have done when dealing with psychological problems.
Instead, think about the sensitivities of the individual who is involved. Deal with that person's crises.
For example, issues relating to death and consolation have major considerations. Many people will offer seemingly excellent advice, which may be based on their own experiences and feelings. Do take their suggestions into account. However, your primary concern should be to determine and evaluate whether the psyche of the client can deal with those “correct” suggestions and advice. After that stage, you can see how much of the standard book recommendations are applicable.
Some people are more sensitive than others. Their temperament, weltanschauung, heredity, or environment requires more protection from potentially damaging issues or elements.
