Ten Years Running! Our most popular Lurk!!

The DAMC Lurks the "Old Hospital" 1995-1996

The D.A.M.C. explored the old spooky Biloxi Regional Medical Center from the Summer of 1995 until late 1996, during the last period of its abandonment. The building was closed down in the early 1980's and remained derelict until renovations by the state began in 1996. The Hospital had 5 floors, plus a basement and a weird sub-basement ( On my third Lurk, I found facing east on the bottom, one door which opened to a half-flight of steps leading a passway set literally in the dirt and concrete foundation of the building - John). Most noteworthy of this place (besides all of the ghost sightings and other spooky shit ) was the failure of anybody to remove most of the equipment after the abandonment, leaving behind a sort of macabre museum for anyone adventurous or foolhardy enough to cross the barriers and probe within:
Machines, instruments, drugs , and books all remained.

Joe and Jason with flashlights and 'medication'( 80 proof) in an examination room By 1995, the abandoned structure already bore the scars from ten years of vandalism: Fires had been set, broken glass littered the dark halls, all over the place was grafitti and shit of wintering bums and transients who cared as little for the place as the younger vandals and punks who were able to sneak into the place, usually on a drunken dare on a late Saturday night. Fatalities at the BRMC during these years have been reported. The DAMC began exploration while it was still relatively easy to gain access into the building and alot of the heavier equipment had not yet been stolen, vandalized, or removed. A serious fire broke out in the east service wing early in 1996 and not long after, the city contracted
to have the building entirely gutted and refurbished as a state office complex, which still serves the public today. A fence put around the complex when this renovation began, as well as on-site monitoring, severely restricted any further
exploration, and by August 1996 the D.A.M.C. turned
towards other projects and interests.
A considerable amount of time and effort goes into exploring, mapping and documenting a building of this size. Besides their personal safety, the primary goal of our explorers was to analyze & access the wealth of material discovered on the various floors during the early lurks.

As the renovation progressed, the Club realised that the days for exploring the site were numbered. About a dozen lurks were made altogether to the BRMC before it was completely and inpenetrably sealed off, and each time we went in the advancing progress made by the demolition crews was apparent. The members who made the final lurks in the BRMC later in 1996 found nothing but a totally hollowed concrete shell of a building, with new elevators by the Schindler company and new window fittings already being installed.

LOOKING AT THE EAST SIDE OF THE HOSPITAL,
Here was the deal: Park down by the pier on Bayside Drive, run past a lodge some hundred or so yards up to this side of it. Scope out the area, run to the fence and squeeze between the two sides of this chained gate (NOT the ONLY way we ever got in..), then run beneath the drive-up awning (the W-shape structure seen here), and get in through the side door, luckily if it was open. Now inside, it was a short walk to a stairwell which went from top to bottom, and to the hall leading to the two main east-west corridors.

On one of our last pre-renovation Lurks, we found this heaping mess in the large utility wing (northeast corner of the hospital), no doubt a result from fighting the huge fire which broke out in here in 1996.

The Biloxi Hospital in the year 2004, the state services building (Driver's licenses, marine resources, etc. The state of Mississippi eventually tallied eight million dollars invested to renovate the building). Compare this 2004 photo to the one above, showing the same perspective in 1996. It was fated that some of the original Lurkers would one day again see the roof of this building, which Joe and John did when they revisited the new facility in February, 2001. Check back later for more details and pictures
