Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Sons and Daughters

Season 6 Episode 3

Plot Summary: Worf's son, Alexander, joins Gen. Martok's crew, causing clashes between father and son. In the end Alexander becomes accepted as the ship's fool and joins the House of Martok. Father and son are reconciled.

Sub-Plot: Dukat uses Ziyal to try to get closer to Kira.

My Opinion: What were the writers thinking!? When I first saw the preview for this episode I was excited with the idea of Alexander making his first appearance on DS9. Now I wish it never had occurred! This episode consisted of a corny mess hall brawl, too many stereotypical father-son chats, and to top it all off the climax of the story was Alexander locking himself in a storage room. It was a good idea but it was poorly done. The only good thing about this episode is the great sub-plot. I love Kira's revelation of Dukat's manipulation. Even better was the scene in which Kira gave the dress Dukat had given her back to him. I love the way she firmly told him that there never was and never will be a relationship between them, and how Dukat still looks hopeful afterward. Then Dukat gave the dress to Ziyal, and she told him how thoughtful he could be at times. This is great stuff!

Wrap-Up: "Sons and Daughters" had a good premise, but it was poorly done. It's sub-plot outshined it's main story. This usually isn't a good sign, but because of how enjoyable the sub-plot is I can give it two stars.
