Evolution
Starfleet orders the Enterprise to assist famed scientist Dr. Paul Stubbs in a time-critical experiment. As they prepare to launch Dr. Stubb's experiment from the shuttle bay the computer systems begin to fail all over the Enterprise and jeopardize the experiment.
While working on an experiment for genetics, Wesley accidently let two "Nanites" escape and they have invaded the computer core and are eating the memory chips. They are tiny machines with billions of bytes of memory and Wesley taught them to work together and to reproduce, making each generation better than the one before it.
Stubbs recommends exterminating them but Picard refuses. Distraught because the Nanites are threatening his life's work, Stubbs enters the main computer room while Wesley, Data, and Geordi are working to clear the Nanites and fires gamma radiation into the memory banks killing all the Nanites in the upper core. The Nanites retaliate by filling the main bridge with nitrous oxide.
Ensigns Of Command
Believing humans are a lower lifeform, the nonhumanoid race, the Sheliak, have not communicated with the Federation for over 111 years. The Enterprise receives a message from them claiming humans inhabit a world deeded to them in their treaty with the Federation and they want them removed in three days or they will destroy all the inhabitats.
When the Enterprise arrives Picard sends Data down in a shuttle craft because the planet exists in an area of hyperonic radiation and besides being radiation that should be fatal to humans it also diables the sensors and transporters.
Data finds a colony of more than fifteen thousand who's colony ship crash landed on the planet ninety-three years before after going off course. Data attempts to prepare them for evacuation, but they refuse to leave and plan to fight for the planet.
The Survivors
After answering a distress call from a remote Federation planet under attack, the crew is shocked to find that all but two of the inhabitants have been killed. An Away Team beams down to Rana IV and finds the planet destroyed, except for a patch of land where an undamaged home still stands. Inside, they meet the sole survivors. An elderly couple, Kevin and Rishon Uxbridge and they can’t explain why they survived and they refuse to leave the planet.
Meanwhile, back on the Enterprise, Counselor Troi's head is filled with music, which continues to repeat. She tells Picard her problem and admits she can't read the emotions of the Uxbridges. Dr. Crusher tries to stop the music in Troi's mind by heavily her, then inducing a coma, but it doesn’t work. Out of nowhere, the ship that attacked Rana IV returns and fires on the Enterprise.
Picard feels the warship is somehow connected to the Uxbridges’ and confronts them about it. He tells the couple that the U.S.S. Enterprise will remain in orbit as long as the two of them are alive. Soon as Picard was back on the Enterprise the warship returned and destroyed the Uxbridges' home, and then the Enterprise destroys the warship. Within hours, the Uxbridges' home reappeared on the planet. Picard beams them up to the ship and forces Kevin to admit that his home, his wife and the warship are not real.
