PROMETHEUS CLASS CRUISER
The USS Prometheus (NX-59650) is an experimental prototype and the first starship of its class. The vessel was built at the Utopia Planetia Starfleet Yards, Mars. This new starship class is equipped with ablative armor hull plating, and it also has regenerative shielding of the same kind used in the recent Sovereign class exploratory cruiser. Several design flaws need to be addressed before this class can be transferred to active duty production status. The most serious design problem is with the multi-vector assault mode.
The multi-vector assault mode is a new tactical configuration that Starfleet research and design engineers hope to incorporate into several starship classes currently on the drawing board. The configuration is hoped to work as an advantage in the war with the Dominion, as well as for added defense against possible future Borg incursions into Federation space.
The multi-vector assault mode is largely controlled by the ship's tactical computer, part of the primary computer core tied into the defensive systems. However, it is possible for the tactical computer control to be either completely or partially overridden by an experienced officer in emergency situations. During an offensive or defensive engagement with an enemy, the starship splits into three interdependent sections, each with its own weapons array, and each under computer and sensor guidance. The main problem with this configuration is that if something happens to the primary hull section of the starship during a battle (i.e., computer damage or section destruction), then the vessel's two stardrive sections have no way to independently reconnect and withdraw from combat. A redesign is called for in terms of adding a battle bridge and standard command crew to the stardrive sections. This change would allow for better control of the vessel before, during, and after a battle.
In the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Message in a Bottle", the USS Prometheus was captured by a Romulan Tal-Shiar team during its trial runs. Fortunately, the Intrepid class cruiser USS Voyager (NCC-74656), presumed lost in the Badlands four years previously, managed to send their Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH) through an ancient alien communications network from their position in the Delta Quadrant to the sickbay of the Prometheus. Voyager's EMH worked with Prometheus' EMH-II to defeat the Romulan plans to take the prototype out of Federation space. Afterwards, the Voyager EMH was debriefed by Starfleet Command and sent back to his ship via the same alien communications network.
