Bashkir
- Bashkir is the native language
of the republic of Bashkortostan, formerly Bashkiria.
This Turkic language (native name: Basqort tele) is also
spoken by Bashkirs not in the Republic, for instance
living in the region of Chelyabinsk, left by Russians out
of the Bashkir republic. In Bashkortostan there
were1,000,000 mother tongue speakers (67%) out of an
ethnic population of 1,371,000 (1979 census). The
composition of the republic of Bashkiria at the time was:
3.9 m people, of which 24.3% Bashkir, 40.3% Russian and
24.5% Tatar. Now the republic has a Bashkir official
name: Bashkortostan. The capital is Ufa. By religion, the
Bashkir are sunni muslims. We have two tables here, one
for Bashkortostan republic, the other one for Chelyabinsk
region.
