Red Kurdistan

In the former Soviet Union, Kurdish were numbered as a separate ethnic group, though no particular territory was atributed to them. Anyway, areas of the Caucasus and Turkmenistan have been of traditional Kurd settlement for centuries. In a period from 1923 to 1929, there was an autonomous region called Kurdistana Sor (Red Kurdistan) in Azerbaijan. The soviet census of 1979 numbered 150.000 Kurds in the USSR, but Kurds themselves give much more higher numbers.
