BUFFALO CALF WOMAN
Legend has it that the sacred peace pipe of the Lakota (Sioux) peoples was brought by a woman who appeared wearing a rainbow colored dress. She approached two Lakota men, one who had good thoughts and one who had bad thoughts. Because of his bad thoughts, the first man was turned into a pile of bones. The second man with good thoughts was presented with the peace pipe which was to represent a peace offering and he became the pipe keeper. The woman promised to return again someday and then she changed into a white buffalo calf. From that time on she became known as the White Buffalo Calf Woman. The birth of the white buffalo calf signifies the reincarnation of the White Buffalo Calf Woman and represents a chance for healing and peace for all people.
