In Egypt , writing was very important as it was used in so
many professions .
The architects who defsigned pyramids and temples etc.
needed to be able to read , write and calculate , as did the
sculptors , tax collectors , various officials , doctors ,
magistrates and lawyers .

We know that even the princes were taught to read and
write , and joining them in lessons were the sons of
‘officials’ .
Some boys in villages may been sent to a local tutor .
At each temple there was a ‘house of instruction and was
probably connected to the palace and the army .
They were most likely to be places where boys would sit
on the floor around there teachers .

During the first few years , school was extra hard , as the
boys would spend all their time copying out old documents
, even though they didn’t understand them , and the
ancient Egyptians thought that the boys should be beaten
frequently .

When around 10 years of learning to read write and
calculate , boys would start to train for an occupation ,
which could be anything from a priest to an architect .
