A Concert for Dominic Saldanha

"Jazz for a Cause", Sat. 13th May, 2000, at the "Pinch of Jazz",
Central Park, Bangalore

The Concert for Dominic Saldanha was conceived by Dr.Tommy Chandy and S. Raman, both noted Jazz Musicians. The need grew out of concern for the noted saxophonist who recently had met with an accident, and who had to meet post-operative surgery expences. (Dr. Tommy Chandy operated on Dominic prevented an amputation). This was a way of musicians acknowledging the contribution of Dominic to Jazz in Bangalore for over 30 years. Dominic had played in various clubs and hotels and the last 17 years was at Windsor Manor Sheraton, Bangalore. Reji Thomas, a noted musician of the past and present General Manager of The Central Park and Pinch of Jazz, welcomed the idea and gave a good contribution in the form of part of the cover charges from the concert. Some of the known names slated for the programme were Rex Rosario, Poornima backed by Eugene Titus, Dr. Tommy Chandy's Jazz Revival, Gerard Machado and Network, Dominic's old band who got together for this occasion, Lester a drummer from Goa, Ranjit Prasad's trio called Radio Therapy (will get their names), Ashley Williams & Ronnie Johnson.
There were so many musicians who came forward to contribute their music for the occasion, and although it was very tightly scheduled, they managed to jam in with some of the bands

The kick-off was at 8 pm, by the Rex Rosario Quartet joined by Raman on Sax. They rendered some excellent light to contemporary Jazz for around 40 minutes. The tables were filled up by 8.15 pm,  lights were dimmed, and the music flowed.

When I put up the photos I will have a little more info for you all, and that would be probably by Monday 22nd May 2K, sorry Ronnie, too confusing with the number of musicians who played and the order, from the photographs I would be in a better position to write the report. Strange, I havent heard about this show from any of the papers?
There was a sad one sided report in the Bangalore Weekly, and Ajay Mehra's comments were unwaranted, as musicians came together for a cause and not a talent competition. I think that reporters should understand the implications their unthoughtful statements make on musicians, espically in Bangalore where 'Live Bands' have been targetted, and musicians find it difficult to have shows to horn their talents. Publishers should sponsor some shows to encourage musicians. It's the musicians who have gone out to sponor musicians. I am sure that Radio Therapy did not by any measure play "traditional and popular jazz numbers"!!
If anyone can remember the sequence, please mail me below and with alos the names of the players. I know some of them were Henry D'Roza, Mike Acuna, Rose, Vinoo Mathew, Bruce Lee Mani, Victor, Lester Bob, Joe, to name a few, all names will be available once the photos are printed as there were many musicians who jammed with other groups and so that has to be sorted. Please await, sorry but no other way!

My humble apologies to all visitors that the photos are not up to what I expected. I used a normal lens but unfortunately it was not used for a very long time, and so it made all the pictures 'underexposed' and so I had to convert to black & white to view. I feel bad at the results, but thats the only lot you can view of the show, nobody else took photos! cheers & sorrows. Ronnie.
I shall sort the pics with proper titles later, and put names of players (?). If you know the players names, please send me an e-mail with the name against the picture. Right now, you can just view the lot by clicking on the links below with your right button mouse and open in a new window.

Incase you missed this one and want something a little less stressful on your purse, there is one more show for Dominic organized by Ashley Williams at the Alliance Francaise de Bangalore,CLICK  HERE FOR  POSTER & DETAILS also Paper Cutting Another Paper Cutting. Radio Therapy will not be playing for this show as Ranjit is down with food poisoning on the way back from Goa where they went to do some gigs. There are a good set of musicians who will perform just to show that musicians support fellow musicians. Black Roses with Ashley Williams), Jazz Revival(S.Raman, Dr. Tommy Chandy & group), Chronic Blues (Peter Issac's group are doing unplugged versions of Blues) are supporting the show. Some of the photos are put up above till I build a seperate page for the show.

Cheers for the moment, and thanks to my friend Rajiv for helping me set the background to proper size!
Ronnie
