Hands On Mathematics

We begin each day with math tubs and small group lessons. We have 6 tubs from which the children choose a hands-on activity to practice. These activities have all been previously introduced during our small group math meetings. Each week I replace one tubbing activity with a new one. In some of the activities the children "record" their work by writing or drawing, but only after much work with manipulatives. Our major sequence of activities is taken from Math Their Way by Mary Barratta Lorton and is as follows:

Four days per week, we have math meetings during the tubbing time. Each student in the class is assigned to one of four heterogeneously grouped teams. A new math concept is introduced to each team using manipulatives. I like this small group instruction, because it allows me to really focus on what each child is doing. I can readily assess whether or not individual children are catching on the lesson objectives. Then this activity is placed in a math tub the following week to allow the children ample independent practice with the activity. Each of the major objectives is taught with different activities and materials, to allow for the individual needs of the children.
