Picture and word charts come from a book called, Success in Kindergarten Reading and Writing by Anne H. Adams. Children learn concepts of print, phonemic awareness and practice comprehension skills with these charts.
The procedure is as follows:
Select a full page picture from a magazine.
A student will select a detail to name in the picture.
The teacher labels the detail, spelling the word(s) aloud as they are written.
The students "echo spell" as the words are written.
A line is drawn from the word to the detail.
This is repeated for several details.
A student selected title is added to the chart.
A sentence is written on the bottom.
The teacher selects a letter or letters to focus on and calls on students to circle the letter.
The chart is displayed for future reference.
