Dr. Finngeir Hiorth was born (1928) and grew up in Indonesia, then a Dutch colony. Thus he has a great connection with the so called Third World. His Norwegian parents served as missioners for the Salvation Army. As a result, he had a religious upbringing, but he became in an atheist at the age of 19.
Since 1946 Hiorth has mostly lived in Norway. He has studied linguistics and philosophy in there, in the Netherlands, in France, and in Germany.
He worked as a lecturer for the University of Oslo Department of Philosophy until 1993. He is a honorary member of the Peruvian Editions of Applied Philosophy (AERPFA), a member of the World Union of Freethinkers and the International Humanist and Ethical Union, and of freethought organizations in Norway, Sweden, Great Britain, Germany, India, and the USA.
AERPFA has translated from English into Spanish his Introduction to Humanism (1996), Introduction to Atheism (1997), Ethics for Atheists (1998) -both published in English by the Hindu Secular Society of which he is a life member- (1998), Values (1999), Studying Religion (2000), Big Bang or no Bang? Science, Religion & Philosophy (2000) -the last 4 books were published in English by the Norwegian Ethical Humanist Society.

(2001) -in Norwegian- (the last 7 books were published by the Norwegian Ethical Humanist Society or its Oslo Chapter), Methaphysics and Materialism (1997) -in Norwegian-,and Atheism in India (1998) –published in English by the Hindu Secular Society-.
