When we married in 1985, we united the Spires and the Gilchrist families, both of which have ties to North and South Carolina. Marion's mother was a Mobley. Nelda's mother was a Hildreth. We began in the summer of 1997 trying to find out as much about our ancestors as we could. Marion had cousins who had done some research to help us get started with the Spires. A family Bible helped supply some information about the Mobley family. A query at GenForum and a response by Carl Mobley who maintains the Mobley Surname Home Page has led to an incredible amount of information on the Mobley branch of the family.
Nelda thought she had very little to go on until a cousin contacted her with an abundance of information about the Gilchrists. Internet contacts with Hildreth cousins have greatly increased the data we have for that branch of the family. We have been avidly searching the internet for additional information on these and allied family names. In the future, we plan to visit family gravesites and research various archives for information.

Agnes Jamison Mobley (Marion's mother) with her sister Dorothy.
Agnes was born July 10, 1907, in Hail Gold Mine, Kershaw, SC.
Her father, Francis Marion Mobley, was bookkeeper for the mine.
