Halloween Memories
Halloween of '75. Shawn was barely a year old and not yet walking. I dressed him as a little red devil. But, he wasn't a very convincing demon with those blonde curls that formed a halo around his cherubic face. I dressed as a gypsy. The Eastern Star sponsored a carnival and I told fortunes at a quarter each. Everyone was going to meet a tall, dark stranger and live a long, prosperous life!
Halloween of '78. Grandpa designed and built Shawn a robot costume. He was adorable doing his stiff-legged walk and "GRRRR!" sounds. The costume was a big hit with all the neighbors, but it made it a little difficult for Shawn to walk and carry his treat bag.
Halloween of '79. Shawn made a frightening Count Dracula. He had worn the cape in a kindergarten production of "Babes in Toyland"--he was that wicked uncle character (I can't remember his name). My sister Tawnya did his make-up. We spent the evening with friends in Mobile. It was a large neighborhood and Shawn got lots of great loot.
One year we carved a jack-o-lantern and had it on the front porch with a candle as the only light. We took the stereo speakers outside and played spooky music. Children were truly scared to come to the door! After Halloween, we left the jack-o-lantern on the porch. BIG mistake!!! It wasn't long before the house was infested with fruit flies that were making a home and feasting off our jack-o-lantern.
