Unknown No. 1
This portrait of a young man was found among possessions my mother, Armorita Nell Hildreth Gilchrist, had stored in her cedar chest.
This young man has been identified thanks to my first cousin, Myrtle Gilchrist Wynne. He is James William Gilchrist, who was born in 1920. According to cousin Myrtle, "J.W.favored grandaddy more than grandmother...Grandmother was very proud of her light headed boy...All the others were dark headed...He was a very religious boy and I sincerly miss knowing him. He was working at a telegraph company in Mobile delivering messages on a bicycle when he was hit by a Mobile Line Bus. He was working to pay for
his education as a minister of the gospel."
Unknown No. 2
This boy's picture was among those we inherited when Marion's mother, Agnes Jamison Mobley, passed away, so we feel that he is probably a relative from her side of the family. On the back of the picture is written: "2611 Mont(?).23" in a circle. Beneath that is a large B, so he could possibly be a Blanton or a Bessinger.
Unknown No. 3: South Carolina Train Wreck
According to an expert who examined these nine pictures for us, the derailment of this passenger train probably happened sometime between 1910-1925. Two of Marion's relatives were railroad men. Great-grandfather Stephen T. Blanton was roadmaster of the Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta RR for 20 years, and great-uncle James C. Blanton was Station Master at the Savannah Union Station.
Unknown No. 4: House in South Carolina
This beautiful house is pictured on a postcard photograph which I have learned were popular from 1905-1930. This one was mailed. (I have another very much like it which was not mailed.) The postmark for this postcard is Kershaw, SC, May 5, 1907. The message says, "Guess you will recognize the picture on opposite side. B.___& A.____ 5/6/07" The card is addressed to Mr. & Mrs. F. M. Mobley, Haile Gold Mine, South Carolina. This couple was Marion's maternal grandparents.
Unknown No. 5: Uncle Jack & Aunt Carrie
On the back of the photo of this handsome couple is written: "1880 - Uncle Jack & Aunt Carrie when young." This was another of the many pictures inherited from Marion's mother. We believe the picture belonged to her mother, Dot Estelle Blanton Mobley, and could possibly be two of her Blanton relatives.
