1.Candles: You will need several candles. Five white candles will be required. You will place one of these candles at each quarter of your circle. You will place one white candle in the north. The north is governed by the elemental of Earth. You will place a second white candle in the east. The elemental of the Air governs the East. The third white candle is placed in the South. The South is overseen by the elemental of fire. The fourth white candle is placed in the West. Water is the elemental of the West. The fifth white candle is placed upon your altar. Try to keep an altar cloth (a piece of velvet works well and is aesthetically pleasing, but each practitioner has distinct ideas regarding intricacy or simplicity for this item). Just be certain that the altar cloth is used for no other purpose.
2.Cord: You will need a piece of rope or braided twine measured at exactly 4 1/2 feet long. You can wear this rope to cinch your robe until it is needed. The practitioner's magicke circle is exactly 9 feet in diameter. If you choose to practice alone, you may fold the cord in half and use it the same way. This way, you will have a 4 1/2 foot circle. This will almost surely be enough for you, your altar, and any other tools you may require. The practitioner stands in the center of the chosen spot. This spot may be indoors or outdoors. Some witches may disagree (in fact, I'm pretty sure about this, but it works either way); we have found that though it is true that looking up at the full moon may help you to keep your magickal objective in mind, it may also draw attention from neighbors. This can be disruptive. Concentration is of the utmost importance. Remember that the Goddess will hear you no matter where you are. When you have found the center of the circle, you anchor the rope with tape or a book (whatever is handy). Then you stretch it out to its full length. You then walk around in a clockwise direction (always clockwise--known as deosil--for positive magicke). If you move in a counterclockwise direction, it is called "widdershins." This activity is used for negative magicke (hopefully, the only thing you will ever use this for is to kill weeds in your garden or to get rid of household pests. One other use is getting rid of a "Freddie(old boy/girl friend who has worn out his/her welcome)." We won't go into this too much right now.
3. You will need a colored candle on the altar, too. The color of the second candle is determined by your magickal objective. Red for love and passion, blue for healing the sick, purple for royalty or power, green for money.(Note: Be sure your candles are the same color on the inside that they are on the outside. Many supermarket candles are colored on the outside but white in the center.)
4.
Next, you will need a chalice and a bottle of wine. During the rite you will pour a libation and drink a toast to the Goddess.
5.
Censer~~Incense is also important for setting the mood and sometimes for achieving your magickal ends. There are several different kinds, all of which work. There are different incenses for different spells. The worst smelling one I know of is Dragon's Blood. But,for now, just buy your favorite. Sandlewood is my favorite and my family usually humors me. If you don't currently have a preference, try several different ones.Note: Don't forget matches! You'll also need a "thurible" or incense burner. You'll save time if you get the kind that will allow you to sprinkle your incense of choice on a small piece of burning charcoal.
6.
The Athame~~ Some witches find this ceremonial knife (blade sharpened on both sides) indispensable, but I find that the index finger of your right hand works just as well. If you decide to use an Athame you may wish to consider making your own. The same goes for all magickal and divination tools. The more of your essence you pour into the tool, the stronger the magicke and the more at home you will feel with the object. If you have no idea how to go about making a knife, we will try to help. Some Craft friends of mine made their own Athames and consecrated them as they went through the stages of tempering the blade. They poured saltwater over it, stuck the blade into the fire, stuck the blade into the Earth and cooled it with a bellows--you get the idea. The Athame works as an extension of your hand anyway. Once you cast your circle with salt (always moving in a clockwise direction), then you go round again pointing your athame or, alternatively, your index finger, at the circle and envisioning a blue circle of flames rising up and surrounding you.
7. Asperger~~ A small container of saltwater for consecrating (blessing) the articles you use in the circle. If you can add seasalt to tapwater that is a good choice. If you have access to ocean water or true saltwater that's even better. But if adding kitchen salt to tapwater is your only choice at the time of the full moon, then by all means, do it. Be sure to consecrate the containers and tools by the four elements.
You light the altar candles and then you cast your circle with salt. If you've drawn it on with chalk beforehand, it should be easy to follow the lines. Then you light the four quarter candles, beginning at the East and ending up back in the East. Your altar should be facing this direction. Now, to finish casting the circle, you use your Athame (or your index finger) to point at the circle of salt. Moving always in a clockwise direction you should envision a circle of blue flames rising up from the salt. The circle of blue flames will protect you from any hostile entities who might wander across the diminisional barrier! You should also have with you paper or parchment (if possible), a pen, your spellbook (if you use one) and your book of shadows to record what happens. Once you cast the circle, NEVER leave it for any reason.
Next, we will give you some invocations for the Lords of the quarters. Although, we think these are personal and you should probably write your own unless you belong to a coven, we will gladly furnish you with some basic invocations to begin with.
The elements and their attendant spirits are important to the practice of magicke. They are all very powerful natural forces and together they are unstoppable. To learn a little more about the subject click on this:Elements!
Sample Invocation of the Lords of the Quarters:
(Remember, begin in the magickal East and end there, always moving in a clockwise direction)
AIR~~East
"Blow ye gales of churning course,
Channel ye your terrible force.
Keep us in protective care,
Let no evil enter here!"
FIRE~~South
"Raging fire, roaring flames,
Join us in the Goddess' name.
Fiery blaze protect this place,
Keep us safe in Your embrace.
WATER~~West
"Swirling waters, crashing sea,
Hear us as we call on thee!
Bring forth the power of thy might,
Watch our circle here this night."
EARTH~~North
"Rumbling depths beneath our feet,
Hear our plea now, we entreat,
Trembling Earth, quaking land,
Hold us in Your loving hand.
This is the only invocation we will include on this page. The rest will be on the "Spells, Incantations & Herbs" page.
Familiars~~We've all seen the depiction of the pet from "Hell" attached to the witch. Her handy shapeshifting friend who keeps watch on her behalf. But what is a familiar really? A familiar is a pet who belongs to a witch (this much is right) and who has been endowed with certain aspects of its owner. If another witch is throwing magickal bolts at you, your familiar will deflect these attacks and give its life for you. Here at Cerridywnn we feel quite close to our pet and would rather fend off our own attacks. There is, however, another way. You may construct a "poppet" of yourself. You simply carve a wax doll or yourself. Endow it with your physical attributes and hollow out a space in the abdominal cavity. In this space, place shreds of your hair, fingernails, spittal and blood. When this is done, consecrate the poppet by the four elements and give it your name. Carefully, wrap this altar ego in a remnant of velvet or silk and place it in a cool private place. This doll will serve the same purpose as a familiar. In case of magickal attack the poppet will be broken. If some witch(or even just an individual who is very angry) with sinister intentions should get hold of this item, though, things could go badly for you. Be sure the poppet is kept in a safe place. Guard it as you would guard yourself. After a year passes by you will need to reverse the spell. Unname the poppet, removing the hair, nails and other stuff of you which is contained in the abdomen of the doll. After this, give the poppet a burial in the Earth (as you would a pet). If this practice helps to give you peace of mind, then create a new poppet to take the place of the old one. This is far preferable to offering up the life of a faithful pet. It is Better karmically, too. Love your pet. Call it a familiar if you wish~~after all, you are a Witch! But do yourself and your pet a favor and do not bind them to you magickally.
Circle Attire~~ What does one wear in a magickal circle. The pentacles are drawn, the circle is cast, you are prepared to summon the God or the Goddess. Does it matter what you wear? This is a highly personal question. Gardnerian Witches usually practice "skyclad." This is fine if it is what you wish. If you are a member of a coven then your dilemma will most likely be solved for you. Most covens have their own guidelines regarding this subject. However, if you are solitary then this topic may be of interest to you. Here at Cerridwynn we believe that mere clothing will not infringe upon you aura or your ability to conjure. And we do not make this statement lightly or without some experimentation. I, personally, have made my own special circle garments for years. I enjoy sewing and I enjoy bringing part of myself to the process. If you do not like to sew or if you do not have the time, it is perfectly acceptable to have a garment made or even to buy one which "feels" right to you. This is important. Some rituals really must be done without clothing in order to bring about the correct mental state (again, this is our opiinion). The self-blessing is one of these. You must cleanse yourself both physically and spiritually for the rite to be effective. The rest of the time, we feel that it is acceptable for you to please yourself. If you feel right in street clothes that is perfectly okay. If you don't then it is not. Simple. Like all other parts of the puzzle that is Witchcraft, this piece will fall into place naturally.
Book of Shadows
Do we seem to be repeating ourselves? It's only because the book of shadows may be an important item. However, you may not realize this until much later. It may seem to take something away from the magicke to write everything down, but consider this: Your children, or other students completely unforeseen at the moment, may profit greatly from your writings. I can hear what you're thinking--Me? How could anyone profit greatly from the few scribblings I might write down. It might sound dumb. Worse yet, it may sound a little crazy. Let us say this about that--there is nothing dumb about recording what has happened to you upon attempting to contact the Goddess or cast a magickal circle. The methods you use today may not work out as well as you might have liked. If you decide to try again later, it might help to have written down what happened today and what formula you used. If your results were less than gratifying then perhaps you might try something different next month. If the formula is written down perhaps, upon reflection, you may say, "Aha! I know what would have made a difference." If nothing has been recorded, you will find yourself relying entirely upon memory. That can be a tricky thing. Try printing the simple forms we've provided for you Book of Shadows. Use the forms until you settle on your own details. Soon, you will find that you'll get comfortable writing things down. It's like keeping a journal. Really no different at all. And it may be truly helpful later on.
Beginning the Book
Start with the beginning. That sounds simplistic, doesn't it? But really, many of us put off starting a book of shadows because we don't know where to begin. Lady Sheba, in her famous Book of Shadows, claimed to have been told by the Goddess to print her coven's book of shadows. That book included words from the burning times when the book was not written but memorized and reapeated orally from generation to generation. If you have past life memories that you feel should be included in your book of shadows, then by all means include them. If you do not have such memories, please do not allow this to keep you from writing the book. Your experiences are meaningful and they may be helpful to you or to others in years to come. Even if you practice solitarily now, there may come a day when you may wish to share the experiences you have had. Start by answering some basic quetions. How did you start to practice? What experiences were significant to you? What basic rituals do you practice regularly? If you celebrate the Sabbats, how do you celebrate?
Spells
Spells should be categorized and perhaps even alphebetized for ease in locating them later. Like your address book--if it does not have some sort of organization it will be hard to locate phone numbers. It is tempting to organize chronologically but difficult for others who wish to follow in your footsteps. And the chances are there will be someone who will wish to follow.
It stand to reason you may need some books in your quest to master the illusive art of magicke. We recommend a few on the Spells page. You may check with uoor friends at Amazon Books by click on the link below. If you cannot find th book you seek, please email me and I will try to help you locate it.
If an answer is not forthcoming it would be fine for you to email us here and we can talk more about this subject.
We'll be adding more on a regular basis. Now, go on to the "Spells Page."
