Teaching Children to Love in the Pagan Path~~

~~~~~***~~~~~
Raising children in today's world is a difficult task. Raising Pagan children in a country which is predominantly Christian is especially hard. Pagan values are different and sometimes our children are taunted, or worse yet, shied away from by their peers. Of course, many of us keep our religious convictions to ourselves and we teach our children to do the same. Some of us have past life memories of the burning times. But even those of us who do not, have sometimes been discriminated against to say the very least. A few days ago my daughter emailed me the following poem which she had stumbled across on the web. The person who had placed it on her page said that she had no knowledge of its origin, but that she had made a few changes of her own. We decided to do the same thing. The following is what we came up with:
Here is a blessing sent to us by a Pagan mother. Thanks, Jennifer!
Oh great Goddess,My Mother,My light,
please protect my child
as he/she sleeps through the night...
give him/her dreams that are good and so sweet
and fill him/her with love from his/her head to his/her feet...
Blessed Be!
seal the bedtime blessing with three kisses to the child's forehead; one for the maiden, one for the mother, and one for the crone.
How Love Raises Children
*When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you hang my drawing on the refrigerator, and I believed I had talent.
*When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make my favorite cake for me, and it wasn't even my birthday, and I knew that little things are special things.
*When you thought I wasn't looking, I felt you kiss me goodnight and pull the covers over my toes to be sure that I was warm, and I felt loved.
*When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw tears come fom your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it's all right to cry.
*When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you become very angry, and stay calm and "use your words," and I learned to do that too.
*When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you give my clothes that didn't fit anymore to those less fortunate, and I learned to reach out to others to help.
*When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you read, just for enjoyment, and I learned to love books and learning.
*When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you look at the full moon in the night sky and utter a prayer to the Goddess and I learned that She is always listening.
*When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you hug a tree, and I learned to see beauty and comfort in Nature.
*When you thought I wasn't looking, I heard you sing as you washed the dishes, and I learned that work can bring great satisfaction.
*When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you fail, and make mistakes, and I saw you keep doing your best, and I learned perseverence.
*When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw people you loved criticizing you for what you believed, but sill you continued to love them, and I learned tolerance.
*When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you close your eyes when I blew out the candles on my birthday cake and I knew that you were wishing too, and I learned that it's okay for grown ups to believe in magicke.
*When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw that you cared and I wanted to be everything that I could be.
*When you thought I wasn't looking, I looked...and I wanted to thank you for being you and for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn't looking.
The following poem is very special. It was written by a close friend who, as yet, has no children of her own. We believe she has the instincts to make a wonderful mother. These sentiments, though, apply to us all. Hugs are much underrated as a form of communication. We think Sheer has captured the essence of the hug. Click on her name to visit her wonderful website!
The Hug
by Sheer
Tis a wonderous thing the hug,
such a small gesture that can convey so much.
Hugs come in all types.
There are hugs 'hello' and hugs 'goodbye'.
There are big bear hugs,
and the sweet hug of a child.
There are the slap on the back, jovial hugs.
And then there is the warm embrace,
encountered in the arms of a "Loved One".
As their fingers dance down your back,
in feather light touches,
like a tip-toeing Spider.
Hugs are never alone,
choosing to travel with laughter and with tears.
They are with us in good times and bad.
They are free to give, yet their worth immeasurable.
A hug is always ready to perform its duty,
whether in writing or in person.
A hug creates a warm glow,
like a slowly burning ember.
Next time you visit with friends or family
remember to bring your hug along.
Show it off, share it.
You won't regret it.
Yes, a hug is a wonderous thing.
Children will encounter all sorts of experiences throughout life. Sometimes we can't control the outcome. But our presences can be felt forever whether we are there or not. Children observe and do as they believe you would do. Help them to believe in magicke and themselves, they will do the rest.
