Magickal Symbols

Often, when designing spells, Witches use magickal symbols. The symbols vary from tradition to tradition but we at Cerridwynn feel that all Practitioners of the Craft should be conversant with the most commonly used symbols. We can only begin to touch on the subject in these pages since the subject of symbolism could easily become a book in itself. We've already included a few symbols in our first Spells Page in our Protection Ritual. We felt it was of the utmost importance since at any time a Witch may need a workable protection rite. It is our feeling that before a student progresses too far, she/he must master the art of not only self protection but the protection of others who may be in the house (or the area) at the time a magickal ritual is performed.

These facts are just plain common sense among Witches. However, the use of symbols goes back to heiroglyphs on cave walls. Symbols may be very simplistic in nature or very complex as in The Greater and Lesser Keys of Solomon. The Qabbalistic symbols on the complex pentacles of Solomon could easily become a website all its own. We have included some of this fascinating symbology here: Talismans. Qabbalisim is quite intricate and must be practiced precisely. I was taught that in order to perform it correctly the operator would need to speak, read, and write ancient Hebrew proficiently. This caveat has kept us away from these beautiful spells for the most part. Ceremonial magicke is tempting and may be just the thing for some of our readers. If you find that it calls out to you then by all means you should look further into the subject. Our only regret is that we are unable to include more information about it here in these pages. Perhaps at some later time.

For now,on the following page we have included a few more commonly seen symbols with some brief explanations to follow. Please bear with us until they are complete.

Most of the above symbols are from Scott Cunningham's book Living Wicca. In the original table, Mr. Cunningham saw fit to include hearts as symbols of love. It seemed to us that this was just a bit too simplistic. We cannot stress enough that anything will work if you believe strongly that it will. However, we will make an effort to find a more suitable symbol for love magicke.
