This old building was once a hospital, I am told. It is now split into seven apartments. I live in one of the upstairs ones with my roommate Rose. Our apartment is right in the middle of the building, having both a back and front door. The outside of the lace is painted a sickly canary yellow with brick red painted awnings. In huge block letters on the broad side of the building of the building reads: CALL 876-0053 FOR RENTAL INFO. Next to ours is another building, identical, except for a piss stained tre in front. I always hated standing near that tree in the summer; it would reek to high hell in the blistering Albuquerque sun. The tree’s garden-block houses a miscellany of shattered beer bottles and fast food wrappers that no one ever bothers with. Behi d both buildings sits an old gutted carriage house that has been partially converted into a laundry room, replete with twirly wheeled laundry cart, folding shelf banking out of the left wall, and a leaky coke machine that would always spit them out warm. The girls beneath us were drunk again. I could tell because it was three AM and they were throwing together a ramshackle band practice. I could feel the bass guitar vibrating through the floorboards into my bedsprings. When sober, they were quiet girls, ouldn’t hurt a fly. When drunk, they could be nastier than that psychotic bum on Central Ave. that would drool and froth at the mouth when you refused to buy one of his books from him. Still, I humored them as these early morning practice sessions were fe and far between. I first heard about the downstairs girls from a crusty old gutter punk named Stanley, who stumbled up my stairs one night, strung out on crack. He told me about how they thought we were rolling marbles around on the floors up here, when e was down there smoking H with them. This summer has not been an exception as far as Albuquerque summers go, and I was unfortunate enough to be around to experience this first hand. I found the controls to the ancient swamp cooler and fiddled with them till the whole thing came lurching to ife, spitting out a rank fishy smell on its dank and humid breeze. I could find no incense to burn, so I threw some dried lavender over a lit burner in the kitchen. That seemed to do the trick for awhile. It was too hot to eat; the only thing I wanted rig t now was a cool beer. There were no beers in the fridge, so I contemplated trekking to the ghetto Smith’s for a 12 pack. Staring out the window made my eyes tear. Our apartment was a cave, which we hardly ever left during the day. At night, after the sun had set, the sidewalks had cooled, the sky become a mellow deep blue, and we could see what little stars visible through the industrial haze and light pollution; we’d crawl out of our various holes to roam the dusty streets and alleys. You could tell if i was the weekend by looking for the flashing lights that midget downtown Albuquerque always used to lure potential victims into it’s thrall. After Stanley told us about the downstairs girls’ heroin habit, we started to think of them collectively as “the H girls”. I watched the older one outside in the driveway one-day, painting a huge bot fly onto the hood of their rusty old Subaru in purple, black, and gray acrylic paint. They seemed wary of us, and would only stare in the rickety old hole of a stairwell. It was not until one of those mutually drunk nights where all of the canary house residents were equally piss-faced that we got to talking. (These nights were loud, and unruly. People scampering up and down the stairs, falling against doors, running out into the driveway in their muddy socks. Even inside was a din, as the walls were paper-thin. Never any privacy.) We found a common link by ou mutual Stanley bashing. We christened him “Stanley the Cockroach”. In his own time he had come onto each and every one of us. So, we sat in my kitchen swilling rum and telling our own Cockroach Stanley Stories. Late one night, Rose and I had found him passed out on our landing. I nudged him awake with my toe. He begged a bagel off of me, so I let him into the apartment while I toasted it. When it was ready I smeared it with butter and went to find Stanley. I fo nd him in the living room; pants at his ankles, swollen purple prick in hand. Rose was too horrified to emit any audible sound, apparently he had been waving it in her face. Another time, I was reading poetry aloud from a journal in a drunken fit of lyric sm on the front steps, when he grabbed my legs and tried to pry them apart. I kicked him. After that, we stopped seeing Stanley around. Rumors started to circulate that he had been stabbed in some dark alley, shot on Central, dismembered in a squat house, or otherwise put out of the race. Joyously we celebrated until one day I spotted him, su prisingly sober on a street corner, he actually looked somewhat clean. “Long time no see”, he said. I stared and then hurried away as fast as the Albuquerque summer heat would allow.
