State Tests and Examinations
A number of parents have expressed
concerns about their child's readiness for various state examinations.
This page will explain them and offer detailed ways to help prepare your
child for them. In each case, you may click on the names of the test
to get more detailed information.
FCAT,
or Fastcat, is the newest test, and probably
one of the best, for it tests a child's ability to use
information, to think through a task. Although all
teachers are using FCAT type questions in class,
the Seventh Grade Reading Class has made
FCAT study a major
part of its curriculum.
My wife, Diane
E. Sutschek, who teaches at
Carwise
Middle School, is currently working on
an FCAT
page that give helpful hints on writing
short answers.
I've already had good results
with it in
my class.
FLORIDA
WRITES This tests the child's
ability to write in an organized and vivid style.
An especially good site to use is by Darlene E.
Hammaker, called Activities
and Guides.
For organization techniques, I suggest my own
page on the Five
Paragraph essay. My wife has also
composed an excellent page incorporating the
state-approved Florida Writes WEB.
COMPREHENSIVE TEST OF BASIC SKILLS,
or CTBS
covers just about all areas of
learning. One program you can use is SkillsBank,
but the program must be purchased. I have not
found a free site which covers the test specifically
but you can get well prepared by following the
links on my own Grammar
page.
