These are a few Testing/Project ideas I've had for the Rebel/Tragedy unit. I haven't tried them all out yet, so you might want to use some caution before incorporating them into your own units. |

After reading about the elements
of Tragedy
on previous pages, I had the class hear Harry's song while viewing the
lyrics. Then, I asked them to write a single paragraph explaining
the elements of Tragedy that they heard in the story.
I got some interesting results. The kids saw use of a chorus, plenty of hubris, an alienated hero forced to rely on himself, and miscalculation of reality. I think the kids really did some thinking and were able to recognize classical devices in modern material. You can find everything you need to do this yourself at The Harry Chapin Fan Page, an excellent site. |

I simply asked the class to read a book and look for examples of Classical Tragedy. If you would like a copy of the complete assignment, click here. (You might find some of the books I selected a bit too easy for your own classes.) |
