Circasians
- Circasians are a
ethno-linguistic group of the North Caucasus. They call
themselves Adyge and their language is Adygebze, but in
Russia they receive 3 distinct ethnic names: the Adyge
proper of Adygea
Republic, the
Cherkess of Karachay-Cherkessia and the Kabardian of
Kabardino-Balkaria. Different alphabets are also
used for the varieties. Between all, they number around
480.000 speakers in the Caucasus. When Russia conquered
their homeland in the 19th century, many Circasians fled
home. Their descendants now live in Turkey (around
100.000), Jordania and Siria (around 50.000) and even
there are two circasian towns in Israel. The Circasian
language is related to Abaza and Abkhaz, and with those
and extinct Ubykh, froms a branch grouped in the North
Caucasian family.
