Bravo Sherry!! If only our political leaders and media spokespersons - not to mention the constituents!! - would ask this question! I'm so sick and tired of all the political rhetoric that constantly interjects this intentionally ambiguous catchphrase - "family values" - in both persuasion and policy. It's meaning is essentially contentless as far as I'm concerned, for I've never heard any politician fond of this expression attempt to define what he means - as Sherry here rightly requests - and as a result the subject is left to the vague orbits of empty emotionalism. This default only serves to undermine and cheapen both legitimate values and family, as its negligence does not even take the care to treat the subject with the concern fit for such issues.
Frankly, I'd like to see more people question it.
Besides, what I choose to value may not be the same thing that another person chooses to value. Are such catchphrases supposed to incite me to value someone else's family if I don't have one of my own?
