Ra- Egyptian sun god and principal deity of historical Egypt, from whom most of the Pharaohs claimed descent.
Radegaste- In Slavonic mythology, a tutelary god of the Slavs. His head was that of a cow , his breast was covered with a shield, his left hand held a spear, and a rooster surmounted his helmet.
Ragnarok- ”Twilight of the Gods.” The day of doom, when the present world and all its inhabitants will, according to Scandinavian mythology, be annihilated. Vitharr and Vali will survive the conflagration, and reconstruct the universe. After this time the earth or realm will become imperishable and happiness sure.
Rahu- In Hindu mythology, a demon that causes eclipses of the sun and of the moon. One day Rahu stole into heaven to quaff some of the nectar of immortality. He was discovered by the sun and the moon, who informed against him, and Vishnu cut off his head. As he had already taken some of the nectar into his mouth, the head was already immortal, and he ever afterwards hunted the sun and the moon, which he caught occasionally, causing eclipses.
Rakshasas- Evil spirits, in Hindu myths, who guard the treasures of Kubera, the god of riches. They haunt cemeteries and devour human corpses, they assume any shape at will, and their strength increases as the day declines. Some are hideously ugly, but other, especially the female spirits, allure by their beauty.
Rama Chandra- The seventh incarnation of Vishnu in Hindu mythology. He is the hero of the Ramayana. Rama probably represents the sun, as Sita, his wife, represents the earth, or “the furrow.”
Rambha- In Hindu mythology, a nymph born of the churning of the ocean. She is a type of female beauty.
Ravana- According to Hindu mythology, a demon giant with ten faces, who was fastened down between heaven and earth for 10,000 years by Siva’s leg for attempting to move the hill of heaven to Ceylon.
Rhadamanthus- A son of Jupiter and Europa, brother of Minos, and king of Lycia. He was so renowned for his justice and equity, that, after death, he was made one of the three judges in the underworld.
Rhamnusia- A daughter of Nox, and otherwise known as Nemesis.
Rhea- The wife of Cronus and the mother of the gods.
Romulus- The mythical founder of the city of Rome.
