Nile Cruise - Ptolemy the ruler
I was looking up at the carving of Ptolemy IX here on the front pylon, one of the six builders of the temple. The Egyptians used to make a big thing about showing how their rulers had defeated other nations.
The Pharoahs were often shown whipping their captives into submission. The captives might be Nubians from the south or Hittites from the northeast. All sorts of people. And I suppose they used to make the carvings of themselves so big to show people that they thought they were very important and powerful and should be respected. Not that they were. The people used to call one Ptolemy "Fatty".
