Nile Cruise - Philae island

We took a boat to reach the temple of Philae which has been transferred from its original island following the building of the Aswan High Dam.  The former island is now submerged.  The temple was built during the Ptolemaic dynasty, which began just over 300 years BC.

Approaching Philae Island

The temple is dedicated to the Egyptian goddess Isis who was worshipped throughout the Mediterranean as a loving, nurturing mother figure.  She was the wife of Osiris, the "eternally good king" who was supposed to have brought agriculture and vine-growing to Egypt.  His brother Seth was jealous of him, had him drowned in the Nile and cut into many pieces.  Isis left her son Horus with her sister Hathor while she travelled the country looking for the pieces to put Osiris back again.  Other versions of the story say that she had Osiris put together again so they they could conceive their son Horus.
