Nile Cruise - scarab

It's not very easy to spot, but underneath the topmost parapet is a stone carving of a scarab.  Scarab beetles are also known as dung beetles.  They come out of the earth at dawn rolling an ever-enlarging ball of dirt and dung which is often bigger than themselves.

The ball of dung reminded the Ancient Egyptians of the shape of the sun, which was an extremely important symbol to them representing the birth of each new day.  And so the scarab became regarded as holy because it would appear at dawn.  So the Egyptians used to put carvings or paintings of scarab beetles above every door in tombs and holy places to remind you that you were entering somewhere new and different.
