Alexandria - Montazah palace
I got an unexpected long stay with friends in Alexandria, an old established town 200 km northwest of Cairo, while Mum was in hospital. Uncle Karim took me to all sorts of places starting with the Montazah Palace which was built around the turn of the century by Khedive Abbas II, a descendant of the Ottoman Turks.
Egypt was ruled by the Turks from 1517 AD until the beginning of the twentieth century, apart from a brief adventure by the French emperor Napoleon. The British took over in the 1890s when Egypt was officially a protectorate, but economically a colony. This changed after Gamal Abdel Nasser came to power in 1952.
