Alexandria - the harbour

Alexandria, or El Iskanderia as it is known in Arabic, was founded by the Greek conqueror, Alexander the Great in 332 BC when he defeated the Persians.  The city was founded here because of its natural harbour which was sheltered by Pharos island lying off-shore.  A causeway now divides the eastern harbour, which you can see here, from the harbour to the west.

Egypt became a noted centre of Greek civilization, trade and learning, although the rulers took care to preserve the Egyptian religion and culture.  The Alexandria Library was renowned throughout the ancient world.  It is now being re-built.  There are also plans to re-build the lighthouse.
