Alexandria - submarine
Alexandria is still a major base for the Egyptian navy. Uncle Karim used to be an admiral in charge of submarines, so he was particularly keen to show me this painting inside Qaytbey Fort, of Gamal Abdel Nasser welcoming a Syrian submarine into port. For a while in the 1950s and 1960s, Syria and Egypt were together known as the United Arab Republic.
