Burial
The desert atmosphere desiccated the bodies of the dead and preserved them. The skills of embalming evolved from this discovery. Certain priests were trained in the art using special herbs and salts. They removed the internal organs, dried the body, packed it to preserve the outlines, painted the skin, inserted artificial eyes and wrapped it in bandages before placing it in a coffin with protective amulets. In this tomb painting, Anubis, the jackal-headed god, is putting the final touches to a mummy before final burial.
Before rebirth in the underworld or into life, the individual soul, or ka, had to overcome various trials before arriving at the judgment of Osiris where he had to answer for his actions in life before 42 gods. Subsequently, his heart would be weighed in the scales against the feather of truth.
