Nile Cruise - the High Dam at Aswan
Egypt is a poor country, but it didn't used to be like that. When the Pharoahs ruled, it was rich. It was rich because people could farm their crops by the river Nile and didn't have to move around. They worked on huge monuments. They had knowledge of science, technology, medicine and maths.
Then, other nations invaded and conquered, like the Greeks and Romans, and later on, others became richer than them, like Great Britain, which wielded much influence between the nineteenth century and the 1950s. Gamal Abdul Nasser came to power in 1952 demanding that Egypt should be for the Egyptians. Although he died before it opened, the Aswan High Dam shows his vision. He knew his country needed both the Nile water and electric power for its industries. This picture faces south, showing the outlet from the dam with the racing water from the hydroelectric power plant coming in from the right.
