The Goosenecks

These "goosenecks" are what a geologist would tell you is a classic example of a meander. These are the largest meanders in the U.S.A. Water cuts it's way through the path of least resistance, and so these are created. Eventually, the river will cut through the "neck of the goose" (thin strip of land) that seperates the goosenecks, and straighten itself out. There is one Gooseneck here that has already been left high and dry. The San Juan River thru the goosenecks is 14 miles long, but only covers 1 1/2 miles in distance. There is a primative campground at the Goosenecks Overlook, just off highway 163. Make sure you bring your own water if you plan to stay here.

Many thanks to John Crossley for letting me use this photo. Please visit him. He has lots of great pics and info on the 4 corners!
