Besides being the home of two Avoyelles families, Chaze and Gaignard (Gagnard), Nanes was the home of Rev. Julius Janeau, founding pastor of St. Joseph Church in Marksville in 1869. Father Janeau made a trip to France after the Civil War to raise funds form the people of his parish in Nantes to help build the first St. Joseph Church.
