THE JOHNSON-JEANSONNE ACADIAN CROSSROADS, INC.
FAMILY REUNION NEWSLETTER
JULY 9, 1999

Final committee meeting is scheduled for Sunday July 18, Mari Center at 1:30 p.m. We will be accepting nominations for the 1999-2000 Officers and Board of Directors during the meeting. We will hold elections on Friday afternoon during the general membership meeting around 3 p.m. If you are unable to attend our meeting on July 18 and are interested in serving as an officer or board member, please contact Joe Jeansonne (318) 876-3705 prior to the meeting. We will accept nominations from the floor on Friday, August 6.

Countdown to August 4, 1999 has begun...Have you pre-registered yet? Have you made your hotel reservations? Have you reserved your seat for the closing ceremonies August 15 at the Cajundome in Lafayette? Are you ready to meet your long lost cousins, to pass a good time, share some old stories, eat some great food and make some wonderful memories? Your reunion committee has been busy over the past year organizing just such an event.

We now have 75 families which have joined our organization and it continues to grow each day. Currently we have 80 individuals pre-registered and that number grows each day. You are not required to pre-register, but it would help our registration committee. This will enable them to prepare your registration packet in advance. If you have lost your registration form, please call Glenda at (225) 869-4042 and I will get you one in the mail.

We will have a number of excellent speakers attending the reunion. Ms. Columbia Johnson will tell us the story of William Johnson and Isabelle Corporon. Dr. Ann Donovan and Kathryn Coombs will make a presentation on the book written by Ann’s brother, Floyd E. Johnson, “Genealogy of the Johnsons and Related Families.” Floyd recently passed away, but he had spent much of his life researching our family roots.
Bessie Dupont has invited on our behalf the Mayor of Marksville to welcome us to the city of Marksville as well as several other dignitaries. Thanks to Jim Jeansonne, we will have William “Bill” Spidale, a wonderful story teller speak to us on Friday afternoon about the Early French and Spanish Colonialization of Louisiana and a little about the Acadian involvement in the Civil War. We are still waiting on confirmation from John Francois writer of the novel “The March”. He will speak to us about the American Revolution and the part the Johnsons and Jeansonnes played. I understand that there were many Acadians who fought the British in 1779 at Baton Rouge.
The famous Patout chefs from New Orleans will provide us with a cooking demonstration (pending the OK from the Mari Center). Alex Patout’s Louisiana Restaurant is located at 221 Royal Street and his sister Gigi Patout is owner of Patout’s & Cajun Cabin Restaurants located at 501 Bourbon Street in the heart of the Vieux Carre. Their parents Gene and Ann have been very active with our reunion committee.
Jim Jeansonne will provide us with the history of Charles Jeansonne, Jr. and wife Marie Rose Brasseaux from the time of their landing here in Louisiana. Judge Allen Babineaux, Honorary President of the Congres Mondial Acadien will address us on the two weeks of activities planned. Eric Jeansonne and Tommy J. Jeansonne have been hard at work on our family genealogy and will have a table set up to present you with your family tree.
The family reunion T-shirts are in and will be available at our final committee meeting scheduled at the Mari Center on Sunday, July 18 at 1:30 as well as during the reunion at a cost of $10. We are hoping the yard signs will be in prior to the July 18 meeting. If they are, we will have them available for $10.
We received a letter from the CajunGrocer, which has launched their new web site to purchase Louisiana Cajun Food favorites on line at http://www.cajungrocer.com. They promise to be secure, convenient, efficient and locally owned by Charlie Hohorst, Jr. from Lafayette, LA. Your may contact him by phone at (318) 264-9002. Our Canadian connection, Alexandre Cyr was kind enough to mail us the Canadian flag for our reunion as a gift to our association. I will be contacting him about speaking during the reunion on the Acadian Johnson Association.
We just received notice from the CMA office of a newly released CD “Si longs temps separe”, featuring Waylon Thibodeaux and Roland Gauvin. We will attempt to purchase some of these CD’s to sell during the reunion at a cost of $5. You will be able to order various CMA merchandise by visiting the official web site of the Congres. They will have T-shirts, caps, pins, posters and the CD with the official song of CMA (http://www.cma-la99.com/en_home.html).

Some upcoming events:
The Acadian Women’s Summit will take place July 31 at the Municipal Auditorium in Morgan City. It will deal with matters concerning Acadian women of today, in the form of discussion groups. I believe it is free, but you need to pre-register by contacting Elaine Clement at (318)234-8739.
The conference Genetics of the Acadian People will take place Monday, August 9, as part of CMA. It will be held at McNeese State University in Lake Charles and will last from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. This event is a world premiere, since for the first time doctors of international renown will apply their expertise to Acadian genetics. In North America, one baby out of 20 is born with a genetic defect. This conference is open to everyone, but reservations are required. An on-line registration page is available at www.acadian-cajun.com/genetics or call Judy LaBorde at (504)568-6117 or jlabor@lsumc.edc.
The Conference on French Immersion in Louisiana, will take place Thursday, August 12 at the University of Southwestern LA in Lafayette. For further information, contact Del Guillory at (318)989-8316.
The closing ceremonies will be August 15, 7 p.m. at the Cajundome in Lafayette. If you haven’t purchase your tickets yet, you may call Ticket Master at (318)262-8686 or on web at www.ticketmaster.com. Remember our family section is 19, but less expensive tickets are available on the upper levels.
Two books have been published by Greg Guirard (318)394-4631) “Cajun Families of the Atchafalaya” and “Atchafalaya Autumn”.The books concern the Cajun people themselves and contain extensive French translations. You may contact Greg if you are interested.

The Acadian Village serves as a monument to the proud culture of the Acadian people. As a folk life museum, it offers an authentic vision of Acadian society in South Louisiana during the 19th century. Period homes of Acadian architecture have been restored to their 19th century appearances and furnished with native Louisiana antiques. A replica of a village store and Chapel enhance the atmosphere of a quaint village setting, that is surrounded by ten acres of gardens and woodland. The Mississippi Valley Museum is a log building resembling a frontier mission of the Mississippi River region. It presents a unique combination of Native American artifacts and scenes illustrating missionary experiences among the tribes of the vast territory drained by the Mississippi and its tributaries.
