Gregorio Fuentes ~ Oct. 31, 1999 Considered to be the model for Santiago, the fisherman in Ernest Hemingway's novel: The Old Man and The Sea "The old man was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck. The brown blotches of the benevolent skin cancer the sun brings from its reflections on the tropic sea were on his cheeks . . . Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated." From The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway Born in 1897, Gregorio Fuentes still remembers his old fishing companion, Ernest Hemingway. He celebrates their birthdays (11 days apart), by pouring whiskey over the latter's bust down by the harbor. |
