Gary Windo

I had the great fortune of knowing Gary and spending some memorable times in his company. I don't really suppose there is a way to put into words what hanging out with him was like. He was funny, eccentric, silly, intelligent. . .a great conversationalist, never mind the fact that, man, he could blow that horn!!! I remember one time in Providence, Rhode Island, he convinced both myself and another touring pal of mine, Donna, to go eat Sushi with him, although neither of us had ever tried it. He was like "C'mon, girls, you've got to try it, you'll absolutely love it. . .Sushi is great. . .", coaxing us with his British accent how could we possibly say no? I'll never forget watching him eat that Tuna Sashimi, thinking "This is really gross!" and somehow forcing myself to give it a try. And today, guess what my very most favorite delectable delight is?? Yep, Sushi!

Everything with Gary was always full on. He was so passionate about it all. I remember when he had joined the Psychedelic Furs in the mid-eighties and their tour was coming through town. I stopped by the club during the sound check and he said "C'mon down tonight, I'll put you on the list." Just one problem, another band was coming through town that night and I was hoping Gary could sit in with them. Sad to say, I never got to see him perform with the Furs because I couldn't tear myself away from the 'Q' at Toad's Place. I did, however, get the chance to see Gary perform with his then wife, Pam, when her band, Pam Windo and the Shades played in New Haven at the Agora.

I have quite a few fond memories of Gary Windo, not only as an outstanding musician in his field, but as a human being full of life's spirit, who engraciated my life with his presence. I can still hear his laugh. . .

Driving Like a Lunatic
Me and Cara (one of my traveling buddies in the early 80's) were on our way from New Haven to the Rusty Nail in Sunderland, MA. We were already getting a late start so I was driving with a heavy foot!! We get about 5 miles from the gig and I notice a police car is coming up behind me. Cara had spilled some water on her wraparound skirt during the road trip and she had the skirt blowing in the wind, stuck out the car window. The cop turns on his lights-we pull over. My friend is sitting in the passenger seat in a body suit and as the officer puts his head in the window on my side, she jumps out of the car over to Sheriff Taylor :-) and pushes her ample bosom together and says "Is there a problem, officer?"- needless to say, we got a written warning for speeding and made the gig on time, after all!

Pajama Gig at UMASS

Me, Cara and Sue (who was Baxter's girlfriend at the time) decided to go to Massachusetts the night before because we knew the guys were coming on pretty early the next day (by their standards). We were staying at the HoJo's (where else??) outside of Amherst. The band was driving in from the previous gig that morning (at that time, they had both the infamous green limo and a bus. . .y'know, the kind you can live on) but they were stopping at the ho Jo's to freshen up beforehand. For some reason, we were told to go on to the gig before the band. There seemed to be a bit of secrecy and I can remember saying to Sue "What are they up to?" I guess Baxter hadn't told her either because we were all a little mystified. As we were getting into my car to head over to the gig, I thought I saw Joey getting onto the bus wearing pajamas and a bath robe. . .nah, couldn't be! Hehehe. . . sure enough, when they came on, they were indeed wearing their pajamas. According to Terry it was just much too early for them to be up playing (they hit the stage around 11 a.m.). The bill that day was NRBQ, Bonnie Raitt, and B.B. King. I had the pleasure of meeting both Bonnie Raitt and Mr.. King that afternoon. Check out the photograph album and enjoy:-)!
