- Many times, it is convenient to have an acid base test in a paper form. You will be making a test paper for the presence of an acid or base from your cabbage indicator solution.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
Coffee filters
Cabbage indicator solution (prepared in experiment MAKING CABBAGE INDICATOR)
Cookie sheet
Quart bowl
Scissors
Zip-lock plastic bagPROCEDURE:
Pour about 1 cup of cabbage indicator solution into the bowl.
Dip one piece of filter paper into the cabbage indicator.
Place the wet paper on the cookie sheet.
Continue wetting the filter paper until the cookie sheet is covered with the papers.Allow the papers to dry.
Cut half of the dry papers into strips about one-half inch by three inches. Store the dry strips and the large papers in a zip-lock plastic bag.You now have test papers for future labs.PROCEDURE CHANGES FOR A CLASS:
- Be sure to make plenty of test papers for the entire class to use in later labs.
RESULTS:
- The juice extracted from the purple cabbage has a bluish color. Allowing the water to evaporate from the juice leaves a pale purple chemical on the paper that changes colors when touched to an acid or a base.
