- Many gases, when dissolved in water, form an acid or a base. In this lab you will produce a color change in your turmeric test paper, with an invisible gas.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
Turmeric test paper strips (prepared in experiment MAKING TURMERIC PAPER)
Distilled water
Household ammoniaPROCEDURE:
Moisten one end of a turmeric test paper strip with distilled water.
Open the bottle of ammoniaImportant: DO NOT inhale the escaping fumes.
Hold the moistened paper about two inches above the open bottle. Do not touch the bottle with the papers.RESULTS:
- The wet end of the paper turns red.
- Household ammonia is a solution of ammonia gas dissolved in water. The smell observed when the bottle is opened is the escaping ammonia gas. This gas mixes with the water on the paper to form the basic ammonia solution which turns the turmeric paper red.
