- In this lab you will observe that dry solids must be wet to be tested with turmeric paper.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
Turmeric test paper strips (prepared in experiment MAKING TURMERIC PAPER)
Distilled water
Baking soda
Cup or baby food jar
TeaspoonPROCEDURE:
Place 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in the cup.
Touch the dry powder with a dry piece of turmeric paper.
Wet one end of the turmeric test paper with distilled water and touch the baking soda with the wet end.RESULTS:
- There is no change when the dry paper is used. The wet paper turns red.
- Baking soda is basic, but it must be dissolved in water before it can react with the colored chemicals on the turmeric paper. The water allows the chemicals to mix together.
