- In this lab you will test different substances at one time for the presence of an acid or base.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
1 large sheet of cabbage testing paper (prepared in experiment CABBAGE INDICATOR PAPER)
4 eyedroppers
1 sheet notebook paper
1 sheet wax paper
Pencil
Lemon
Grapefruit
Orange
Household ammonia
Baking soda solution
Pickle juice
Laundry stain treatmentPROCEDURE:
Place the notebook paper on the table
Lay the cabbage paper on top of the notebook paper. Use the pencil to write the names of the testing materials on the notebook paper, around the cabbage test paper.
Place the sheet of wax paper between the notebook paper and the cabbage test paper. Line-up the test paper between the labels on the notebook paper.
Squeeze two drops of lemon juice on the cabbage paper next to the word "lemon."
Squeeze drops of grapefruit juice and orange juice on the testing paper next to their names.Use an eyedropper to place two drops of ammonia on the testing paper next to its name.Use clean eyedroppers for each remaining solution, and place two drops of each on the testing paper next to their names.RESULTS:
- Ammonia, baking soda solution, and laundry stain treatment, turn the cabbage paper green. All of the remaining liquids produce a pink-to-red color.
- Bases turn cabbage testing paper green, and acids produce a pink-to-red color. Citric acid is present in the fruit. Pickle juice contains vinegar, which has the chemical name of acetic acid.

INTRODUCTION:
