This lab is to determine how to test materials for the presence of starch.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
1/4 teaspoon flour
Tincture of Iodine
Saucer
Tablespoon
PROCEDURE:
Place 1/4 teaspoon of flour in a saucer.
Add 3 tablespoons of water and stir.
Add three or four drops of the Tincture of Iodine.
RESULTS:
The combination of starch and iodine produces an intense blue-purple color.
Starch is a very large chemical molecule. It looks like a long twisted chain with many branches sticking out. This long twisted chain is thought to capture the iodine inside its spiral pattern. This produces the color.
