- In this lab, you will react the element iron with vinegar to produce iron acetate. You will then react this iron acetate you made, with ammonia (ammonium hydroxide). A chemical reaction occurs as soon as these two liquids combine. The equation for this reaction is:
ammonium hydroxide + iron acetate ---> ammonium acetate + iron hydroxide
- You can see that there is an exchange of materials. Nothing new was produced. There is still ammonium, iron, hydroxide, and acetate, but the recombination produces a totally different result. The original materials were liquids and the product is a green precipitate.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
White vinegar
steel wool
Household ammonia Spoon to stir
Masking tape for label
2 small baby food jars with one lidPROCEDURE:
Label the first jar as IRON ACETATE.Fill the labeled jar one-half full with steel wool.
Add enough vinegar to cover the steel wool.
Secure the lid on the jar and allow the jar to stand undisturbed for 5 days.After the 5 days, pour one tablespoon of the liquid iron acetate into the second jar.Add one tablespoon of household ammonia and stir. A dark green, substance forms immediately.
