Biography celebrates folklorist Helen Creighton
Creighton collected and helped promote some of the earliest sound recordings in existence of African Canadian, Micmac, Acadian and Gaelic material. But Clary Croft says some of her critics felt her focus may have been misguided. "For instance, she was afraid of songs of the labour movement that was a personal bias of hers therefore she didn't collect them," says Croft. "Today, a contemporary folklorist working in the field today may say 'Although I don't agree with the Klu Klux Klan I will go an interview people for their folklore information' and it's for these kinds of things she's been criticized." Although Croft agrees with this criticism to a point, he says this shouldn't diminish Helen Creighton's work.
Museum answers critics with exhibit on bloody 1919 strike
The Canadian Museum of Civilization, criticized for ignoring some of Canada's unpleasant historic events, has opened an exhibit dealing with one of the ugliest confrontations in the country's history. With the help of $50,000 from the Canadian Labour Congress, the museum launched two "social progress" exhibits yesterday -- a recreation of Meeting Room No. 10, used by unions during the bloody Winnipeg general strike of 1919, and a companion Web site devoted to Canadian labour history.

In Solidarity We Stand---150th Anniversary of Canada's Oldest Union
On behalf of the Executive and membership of Local 273, we are pleased to welcome you all to the 150th anniversary website for Saint John Longshoremen. Our anniversary is a momentous event; commemorating the fact that 150 years ago, Saint John longshoremen formed the very first trade union in our nation's history. The St. John Labourer's Benevolent Association was not only the first trade union in Canada, but also the first longshoring union in all of North America. Those facts are indisputable.

Labour of Love by Buzz Hargrove
Hargrove is President of the Canadian Auto Workers’ union, the largest private sector union in the country. A former auto worker himself, he rose through the ranks to become the CAW’s National President. He had never written a book, but friends and colleagues convinced him to write Labour of Love. They argued that as a progressive labour leader, he had a unique and valuable perspective on the struggle against the corporate agenda. It’s a perspective that includes a critical look at the NDP, and raises the possibility of a new political grouping that more effectively represents working people.
"Dramatic changes took place in the American labor movement in the 1930s. Most of the significant legislation affecting labor unions now was passed during the New Deal. What conditions led to the formation of industrial unions? What shape are they in at the end of the century? Join in the exploration of American labor history on the web."
