I am trying to determine if there is a National Registry for GAR veterans monuments. The monument we have in our small community includes the names of 16 veterans who died in the Civil War. It was dedicated on 09/10/1866. If there isn't a registry can ne be established and can they be recognized as Historic Landmarks? I imagine we would first have to start with each state? I am writing to everyone and anyone for assistance and your state's web page was one of the first to come up. Thanks, PJGilfoyle 865 Water St, Conneaut Lake, Pa 16316 - 814 382 7691

My husband's grandfather's brother, William Franklin Nelson served in the 134th regiment, company E, Indiana Infantry in the civil war. He's buried in the North Salem Cemetery The name change happened I suppose when he enlisted and has evolved from Neil on as his father spelled it, to Nielsen as we spell it today. His roots are in Denmark and he was age 18 at his death, leaving behind his widowed mother and several minor children. He'd been her only support, and she was unable to collect his pension th she tried valiantly to do so. Each of these soldiers have stories, I'm just grateful that ours left a paper trail. Thanks for being here...

My greatgrand father, George Knight, was in the 84th Indiana Infantry. There is currently a re-en acting group of the 84th out of Muncie, In. I started re-enacting just this year. My first event was at Billie Creek in the Sanitary Commission & medical dept. The next event will be in Cambridge City, IN. Sept. 12 & 13. George is buried at the old Oak Park Cem. in Grant Co. In. I was told by the county historian that these older cemetaries are not taken care of by the county very well. I'de like to see more care taken with our old cemetaries. The are an invaluable resourse for all of us. Anyone interested in "talking" about the civil war or genealogy, give me a "call". Keep up the great work on behalf of our Vets. Thanks, Cindy

I ran across your pages by accident while looking for information about New Harrisburg, IN. My GGGrandfather was Charles F. Nelson, musician/private in the 12th Reg. of Indiana Volunteers. He survived the war and was mustered out when the regiment was disbanded on June 8, 1865. He died on January 10, 883 and is buried near New Harrisburg. Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck finding that town, though I know it was in Wabash County, perhaps near Disko, where his widow, Mary Rittenhouse Nelson, later lived. Anyone heard of New Harrisburgh, in Wabash County? Any info would be greatly appreciated. -SN-

No one has been buried in the graveyard since about 1880 or so. The place is commemorated with a relatively recent plaque commemorating the service of these men to their coun ry. I am planning on designing iron gates and fencing it off with a rustic fence next year. Captain L. allegedly served with Lew Wallace, was commissioned a Capt. on June 30, 1863 and died while on leave in 1864. I do not know his regiment. Can any one he p? Great Site! While researching one of my paternal lines I was given copies of pension records for Nathan S. McDowell, 1st Cavalry, Tennessee, Confederate, who died December 1, 1863 at Camp Morton at the age of 66 years. His widow had applied for a pensio for his service in the War of 1812! She was granted the pension. I am interested to know if a marker exists with his name on the mass grave at Crown Hill. If anyone is interested in the pension files contact me by E-mail. Thank you and again, great sit .

James Henry Marion Montgomery was a relative, I believe my great-great grandfather. At death, January 18, 1898 he was Colonel in the Company F, 33rd Ohio Voluntary Infantry. I have the geneology of my family and it is so exciting. JHM Montgomery stated: I not only fight this rebellioin down, but write it down, and when practicable, vote it down intending to teach my children and grandchildren children to vote against the men and party that substain it, North as well as South. bm inkerton--3601 w tierra buena lane, #105b, phoenix, az 85023
