Many listed here have been investigated by the Boulder Police Department in the natural process of eliminating as suspects those closest to the family who might innocently have left trace evidence in the house.
Others were investigated because the BPD and/or the Ramseys targeted them as possible suspects. They were asked to provide DNA, fingerprint, and handwriting samples and questioned by the BPD and Ramsey private investigators. Almost all were also questioned to see if they could shed any light on who might have murdered JonBenet.
Because this is considered by most to be an "inside job," Ramseys and their associates constitute the pool from which many case witnesses have been and will continue to be drawn.
John and Patsy Ramsey are the only two people known to remain under the "umbrella of suspicion."

JonBenet Ramsey

Six year old kindergartner found murdered in the basement of her Boulder home 12/26/96. JonBenet, born 8/6/90, had been active in the child beauty pageant circuit, winning such titles as Little Miss Colorado and America's Royal Miss.

Patricia "Patsy" Paugh Ramsey

JonBenet's mother. Patsy, born 12/29/56, is a former Miss West Virginia who competed in the 1977 Miss America pageant. She was active in volunteer and charity work in Boulder and moved to Vinings, an Atlanta suburb, with her family shortly after the murder. In March 1999, the Ramsey's sold their Charlevoix home, in June 1999, the Ramsey's reportedly moved out of their Vinings home. Patsy remains a suspect in the case, and has not been ruled out as the author of the ransom note.
Patsy Paugh Ramsey died after a long battle with cancer at her father's Roswell, GA home on Saturday June 24, 2006. She will be buried at same cemetery as JonBenet.
A Visit With JonBenet

John Ramsey

Multimillionaire father of JonBenet who was born 12/7/43. John was CEO of Access Graphics, a billion dollar Boulder computer firm he had helped build. After the murder of JonBenet he moved to Atlanta, where he became CEO of Jaleo North America, a branch of Comunicacion Integral, an international computer software firm based in Madrid. He left that position in March of 1999 and Jaleo closed its Atlanta office. John, who discovered his daughter's body in the basement, remains a suspect in the case.

Burke Ramsey

Older brother of JonBenet, son of John and Patsy. Burke, born 1/27/87, was almost 10 at the time his sister was killed. Burke testified before the Grand Jury on May 19, 1999. The following day, the Boulder DA officially announced that Burke was "cleared" as a suspect in the murder of his sister.

Lucinda Pasch Ramsey Johnson

John Ramsey's first wife who lives in Roswell, Georgia, near Atlanta. She has always defended the Ramseys' innocence. After Cindy and John divorced, John's late father, James, married Lucinda's mother, Irene, who has since remarried and lives in Florida.

Elizabeth Ramsey

JonBenet's half-sister, daughter of John and Lucinda. Beth was killed in an automobile accident in 1992 when she was 22. The circumstances of her death were investigated by the BPD as part of their JonBenet investigation, but no foul play was found.

Melinda Ramsey Long

JonBenet's half-sister, daughter of John and Lucinda. Melinda was 25 at the time of the murder, and was officially cleared as a suspect. She is a nurse in Atlanta who married Dr. Stewart Long III November 14, 1998 at the First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, Georgia. It is rumored that Melinda quit her nursing job in early 1999.

John Andrew Ramsey

JonBenet's half-brother, son of John and Lucinda. He was 20 and a student at the University of Colorado in 1996, and was officially cleared as a subject.

Nedra Paugh

Patsy's mother, a West Virginia native who lived in Roswell, an Atlanta suburb. Nedra passed away at the age of 68, on Friday March 2, 2001 after a long illness. Funeral services were private, Nedra was buried next to JonBenet at the St. James' Episcopal Church cemetery in Marietta, GA.

Donald Paugh

Patsy's father who lives in Roswell, GA. A former Union Carbide engineer, Don invested in John Ramseys' business early on and held a position in Access Graphics in Boulder where he maintained an apartment. After the murder, he worked for John as Chief Operating Officer of Jaleo North America. It is unkown what he is doing since Jaleo closed its Atlanta office in March 1999 and John Ramsey quit as CEO.

Pamela Paugh

Patsy's younger sister who was Miss West Virginia and competed in the Miss America pageant in 1980, three years after Patsy. Pam, a Chanel makeup artist in the Atlanta area, recently appeared on talk shows in behalf of her sister and brother-in-law. She has been the only Ramsey friend or family member to come forward publicly since Patsy gave the "green light" for them to speak out to the media in support of the Ramseys.

Paulina "Polly" Paugh Davis
and Grant Davis

Patsy's youngest sister and her husband. Polly is a housewife and mother of a young son and daughter. She and Grant live in the Atlanta area.

Jeff Ramsey

John's brother, who lives in the Atlanta area and spoke in support of the Ramseys on the documentary.

Peggy Ramsey

Jeff's wife, who also supported the Ramseys on the documentary.

Dr. Stewart Long III

Husband of Melinda Ramsey. A recent medical school graduate from Atlanta, he was engaged to Melinda at the time of the murder. He had been traveling to Michigan with Melinda and John Andrew when they were rerouted to Boulder the day of the "kidnapping." The Longs were married November 14, 1998 at the First Presbyterian Church in Marietta, Georgia.

Mike and Pam Archuleta

Pilot scheduled to fly the Ramseys to Michigan the morning of the 26th and his wife. Mike is said to be a friend of John Ramsey. Pam was Executive Director of the Boulder United Way. Mike was rumored in a tabloid to have gone to the home to pick up the Ramsey's that morning and to have been given a box by John Ramsey. Archuleta denies it.

Joe and Betty Barnhill

Across the street neighbors of the Ramseys who had given JonBenet's brichon frise, Jacque, a home the previous summer. JonBenet's Christmas bicycle was stored in their home until Christmas Eve. Joe Barnhill talked to the media early in the case, but was told by the Ramseys to keep quiet. Barnhill's palsy caused the shakiness in his handwriting sample to somewhat resemble the ransom note, but he was excluded as the author.

Dr. Francesco and Penni Beuf

JonBent's pediatrician and his wife, who were also Ramsey friends and fellow parishioners of St. John's Episcopal Church. Dr. Beuf has stated that he saw no sign of sexual or other abuse in any of the 27 visits JonBent made to his office in the 3 years prior to her death. He prescribed tranquilizers to Patsy the day of the murder. Anything the Ramseys told Dr. Beuf might be considered privileged because of his physician status.

Shirley Brady

Live-in nanny for the Ramseys when they lived in Atlanta and before JonBenet was born (1986-89). She babysat occasionally with the children after JonBenet was born, and stayed in close contact with the family once they moved to Boulder. She spoke with Patsy on Christmas day and has expressed belief in their innocence.

Diane Brumfitt

Next door neighbor to the Ramseys to the South. A high school counselor, Brumfitt told the police that she noticed a light off in the sunroom of the Ramsey home and said she thought it odd since it was the only time she was aware of in the past few years that the light did not burn all night.

Mike Bynum

Boulder attorney and family friend who acted in the Ramseys' behalf early after the murder and reportedly urged them to retain attorneys. Because Bynum is one of their attorneys, anything the Ramseys communicated to him would likely be privileged.

Judy Crowder

Roswell, GA friend and neighbor of Lucinda Ramsey Johnson, who hosted Christmas dinner for Lucinda, John Andrew Ramsey and Melinda Ramsey. She helped provide an alibi for JonBenet's half-siblings.

Margaret Dillon

Neighbor of the Ramseys who lived behind them, across the alley.

Leslie Durgin

Mayor of Boulder at the time of the murder, who made the statement that there was "no killer on the loose" in Boulder, which reportedly prompted the Ramseys to see themselves as suspects. Durgin, a cancer survivor like Patsy, was an acquaintance of Patsy; they had been introduced by mutual friend Judith Phillips.

"Pasta" Jay Elowsky

A friend and business partner of John Ramsey. Elowsky, owner of a chain of Pasta restaurants in Colorado, was in Michigan on Dec. 26th. The Ramseys stayed in his home for six weeks following the murder. Elowsky, a controversial Boulder figure with a history of domestic violence, was arrested for assault during that time when he threatened with a baseball bat people he thought were reporters stalking the Ramseys. He was able to plea bargain the case to get probation, which was "overlooked" when he violated it the following year with a DWI.

John and Barbara Fernie

Friends of the Ramseys who were present in the home the morning of the 26th when police arrived. John Fernie was in the basement when John Ramsey found the body. The Ramseys stayed with the Fernies for several days after the murder. Fellow parishioners of St. John's Episcopal Church, they can be seen in a video physically supporting the Ramseys as they exited the church in early January. Barbara, who believed in the Ramseys initially, reportedly began to doubt Patsy's innocence and was dropped by the Ramseys. John Fernie, a developer, at last report was still friendly with John Ramsey.

Scott Gibbons

A neighbor to the North of the Ramseys, he claims to have seen strange lights in the home shortly after midnight Christmas night.

Mike Glynn

Former Director of International Business Development at Access Graphics who was named as a "disgruntled ex-employee" and investigated by police. He had daughters the same age as JonBent and had socialized with the family. Glynn, who has moved to Tuscon, claims he had left AG on good terms and for a better job.

Kristine Griffin

Teenage daughter of Pamela Griffin who babysat JonBenet and coached her in pageant skills. She has accompanied her mother on talk shows to defend the Ramseys.

Pamela Griffin

A Boulder nurse and dressmaker who made JonBenet's pageant costumes. Pam has been an outspoken Ramsey supporter who has appeared on many talk shows. It was reported in late 1999 that the makers of the TV mini-series "Perfect Murder, Perfect Town" offered her thousands of dollars to make six dresses for the film. However, Griffin was so outraged at the book by the same title that she told the movie-makers to take a hike.

Diane Hallis

Ex-Access Graphics employee who sold her story to a tabloid. She told how controlled she thought the Ramsey children were, how cold she thought John was to Patsy, and said she thought they were guilty of the murder and a coverup, based on phone calls she allegedly intercepted at Access Graphics.

Tom Hand

Architect in charge of the Ramsey home remodeling project, he commented that Patsy was very security conscious. Blueprints of the home were given to the police and house plans in public records were sealed.

Carla Haney

A Ramsey neighbor who walked her dog at 1:00 a.m. 12/26/96 and reported that the neighborhood was quiet.

Dr. W. Frank Harrington, Pastor

Pastor of the Peachtree Presbyterian Church who married John and Patsy in 1980 and eulogized JonBenet in 1996. Reverend Harrington died March 3, 1999.

Rev. Rol Hoverstock, Rector

Rector of the Ramseys' Boulder church, St. John's Episcopal. He was present at the home on the 26th. Because he is a priest, anything the Ramseys may have told him would likely be considered privileged.

Pete Hofstrom

Assistant Boulder DA, Hofstrom was Hunter's main contact with the Ramseys until recently. His family attended St. John's Episcopal Church with the Ramseys, as well as John Ramsey's defense attorney, Bryan Morgan, who is a close friend of Hofstrom. Patsy produced one of her five handwriting samples in his home, an event described as "afternoon" tea by Vanity Fair. While he will not be a witness, it is important to note he may have had a prior relationship with the family, and at a minimum, shared mutual friends and associates.

Mary Justice

An Atlanta friend and supporter of the Ramseys, she was diagnosed with cancer in 1990. Patsy organized a "meal chain" for her family following her surgery.

Gil and Jayne Kloster

Atlanta friends who supported the Ramseys when Beth was killed and Patsy when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1992. Dr. Kloster helped Patsy find the best treatment program.

Patricia Limerick

A Ramsey neighbor. Limerick is a western historian at the University of Colorado.

Jim Marino

A close friend of John Ramsey from Atlanta who worked for him at Access Graphics in Atlanta and then later in Boulder. Investigated as a "disgruntled employee" suspect, he later publicly supported John Ramsey but said he couldn't vouch for Patsy.

Leslie McHue

A Ramsey neighbor across the street who was offended by the reward flyers distributed by the Ramseys only in their own neighborbood.

Linda Edison McLean

Patsy's former teacher and family friend from Parkersburg, WVA, she recently authored and privately published "JonBenet's Mother", a collection of recollections about Patsy from assorted Ramsey family and friends. Patsy wrote the foreword. Linda McLean helped Patsy write her dramatic reading about freedom of the press for the talent portion of the 1977 Miss America pageant. McLean is currently working as a real estate agent.

Bill and Janet McReynolds

Better known Santa and Mrs. Santa. Bill is a retired journalism professor from the University of Boulder who became a suspect early in the case after talking about his relationship with JonBenet when he played Santa at the Ramseys' Dec. 23rd Christmas party and on other occasions. Janet also came under suspicion when it was revealed that she had written a play many years before, the subject of which was a murder of a girl in a basement, and that the McReynolds had a daughter who had been molested as a child many years before on the day after Christmas, the same day JonBenet's body was found. Their sons, who had never met JonBenet or the Ramseys, were also investigated. The McReynolds have since moved out of state and have publicly voiced their dismay about being innocently caught in the web of the Ramsey case.
Bill McReynolds died of a heart attack in September, 2002 at the age of 72.

Jeff Merrick

A former friend and former employee of John Ramsey at Access Graphics among those identified as "disgruntled ex-employees." When asked to give a lie detector test, he said he'd be glad to as soon as the Ramseys did.

Glenn Meyers

An elderly man, he boarded with the Barnhills, who lived across the street. He was investigated and asked for repeated handwriting samples.

Stephen Miles

A neighbor who lived 6 blocks from the Ramseys (and next door to Judith Phillips) but had never met them. He was investigated in the murder because of charges made many years ago, which had subsequently been dropped, that he photographed a 17 year old nude male. He is presently suing the National Enquirer, two reporters, and John Ramsey for defamation because of an article that claims John Ramsey said he was the killer. Note: On December 18, 1998, the portion of Miles' suit against John Ramsey was dismissed. On Febrary 29, 1999 the suit against National Enquirer was dismissed.

Bryan Morgan

One of John Ramseys' defense attorneys, partner in the Denver firm Haddon, Morgan & Foreman. A resident of Boulder and former Boulder Assistant DA, Morgan was a fellow parishioner at the Ramseys' church and close friend of Boulder Assistant DA, Pete Hofstrom, who had major responsibility the first eighteen months in prosecuting the Ramsey case.

Judith Phillips

Photographer friend of the Ramseys who knew them in Atlanta and moved to Boulder before them. She began questioning their innocence and the Ramseys ended their friendship with her. She later sold her story and photos she had taken of the Ramseys to a tabloid. Phillips organized a memorial vigil at the Ramsey home on the anniversary of JonBenet's death and she has written a letter openly calling for the appointment of an independent prosecutor.

Mervin Pugh & Linda Hoffman-Pugh

Ramsey handyman and housekeeper. Some think a sketch a psychic drew of killer on the Leeza show resembles Mervin. Linda Hoffman-Pugh has sold stories about intimate details of the Ramsey household to the tabloids. Both were investigated early in the case as suspects. Linda's 12 year old daughter sometimes played with JonBenet.

Randy Simons

Photographer who took many of JonBenet's photos and sold the portfolio for $7,500. He is responsible for many of the images of JonBenet that have become so familiar. Simons was arrested October 16, 1998 in Genoa, Colorado, on suspicion of indecent exposure. He was arrested while walking down a residential street nude. He reportedly blurted out to the arresting deputy, "I didn't kill Jonbenet," and was sent to Denver University Hospital for a mental evaluation.

Carole Simpson

Long time Atlanta friend of Patsy and a Ramsey supporter.

Jim and Betty Smith

Old friends of Patsy's from Parkersburg, WVA. Jim organized beauty pageants and Betty was Patsy's chaperone in the 1977 Miss America pageant.

Melody and Luther Stanton

Across the street and diagonal neighbors of the Ramseys, Melody reported hearing a scream shortly after midnight on Christmas night. Her husband Luther reported waking up after his wife heard the scream, and hearing the sound of metal grating on concrete. The Stantons no longer live in Boulder.

Dr. Donald Stevens

Fraternity brother of John Ramsey at Michigan State, they had been friends for 30 years. A University of Colorado executive, he is married to former Lt. Governor of Colorado Gail Schoettler, who lost her bid for governor on the Democratic ticket in the November 1998 election. Stevens has a history of domestic violence and has used the Haddon, Foreman & Morgan law firm in dealing with his legal problems in this area.

Glen and Susan Stine

Among the strongest supporters of the Ramseys, these friends were the last to see JonBenet alive when the Ramseys dropped off a Christmas gift at their home Christmas night. Glen Stine followed the Ramseys to Atlanta in the summer of 1998 after resigning as Vice President for Budget and Finance at the University of Colorado. He joined John Ramsey at Jaleo North America as Chief Financial Officer. Stine, like John Ramsey, is a graduate of Michigan State University. It is not known whether they knew each other in college. Susan apparently remained in Boulder, where she had been employed as Director of Planning and Institutional Research at the University. Since Jaleo closed their Atlanta office and John Ramsey quit, it is unknown as to the whereabouts of the Stines. Their son is close friends with Burke.

Jane Stobie

An outspoken critic of the Ramseys, Stobie was sent to Atlanta in 1990 to manage the Atlanta office of Access Graphics and close it down. The entire Paugh Family (Don, Nedra, Pam and Polly) were on the payroll, and she worked particularly closely with Nedra Paugh at that time.

Laurie Wagner

A friend and Access Graphics Vice President at the time of the murder, Wagner was a spokesperson for the Ramseys for the company. Upon leaving Access Graphics, she opened her own gourmet pet food company in Arvada, Colorado and closed it in February 1999. She has since returned to the high-tech field as Sr. Vice President of Marketing for ICSA, Inc. located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. ICSA provides Internet security assurance services.

Stewart and Roxanne Walker

Friends who lived 3.4 miles from the Ramseys. The Ramseys delivered Christmas gifts to the Walkers on December 26 shortly after 9:00 pm, after leaving the Whites' house and before they delivered gifts to the Stines.
J. Rod Westmoreland

Atlanta banker and financial consultant for and friend of both John and Jeff Ramsey. John called him early in the morning on the 26th to gather the ransom money together. After the funeral, Fleet White confronted Jeff Ramsey in Westmoreland's house prior to going to the the Paughs to confront the Ramseys for what he perceived as their failure to cooperate with authorities.

Fleet and Priscilla White

Close friends of the Ramseys who were called to the house that morning, Fleet was in the basement when John discovered JonBenet's body. The Whites, who have children the same age as JonBenet, had hosted Christmas dinner for the Ramsey family the night before. Although Fleet, an oil executive, was a pallbearer in JonBenet's funeral, he confronted the Ramseys shortly afterward at the Paugh's home and almost came to blows with John. He was allegedly concerned about the way he perceived the Ramseys to be reacting to the death and not cooperating with the investigation. A major witness for the prosecution, Fleet, along with Priscilla, have authored several letters imploring the appointment of an independent prosecutor for the grand jury.
