USE:
a) MUCH
is used with uncountable
(singular) nouns:
much
rain, much dust, much time ...
b) MANY
is used with countable (plural) nouns:
many
days, many chairs, many minutes ...
MUCH and MANY are normally replaced in affirmative sentences by: A LOT OF, PLENTY OF, A GREAT (GOOD) DEAL OF.
MANY
is also replaced by LOTS OF:
She
knows LOTS OF people in China.
She took A GREAT DEAL OF trouble
to please us.
REMARKS:
1.
As pronouns, however, MUCH and MANY
are used in the affirmative:
MUCH
depends on her answer.
MANY believe that he is an intelligent dog.
2. LITTLE
(opposite of MUCH) is used with uncountable
(singular) nouns:
little
rain, little dust, little time ...
FEW
(opposite of MANY) is used with countable
(plural) nouns:
few
days, few chairs, few minutes ...
REMARKS:
1. LITTLE
and FEW have a negative implication;
FEW has the meaning "not many"
and LITTLE the meaning "not much".
FEW
people would agree with him.
We have LITTLE time to study.
2. A
FEW and A LITTLE have a positive
implication. They mean "some".
A
FEW people would agree with him.
We have A LITTLE time to study.
3. The comparative
of inferiority of FEW and LITTLE
is, respectively, FEWER and LESS:
They
have spent FEWER days in Paris than
Christina.
Had you studied harder you would have had LESS difficulty.
Their comparative
of superiority is MORE.
They
have spent MORE days in London than Christina.
Hadn't you studied you would have had MORE difficulty.
4. Note the following expressions:
