THERE IS - IT IS

THERE is used as a subject in English when we wish to express the existence of a certain object(s) or person(s).
So, instead of saying:
A book is on the table.
Two boys are outside.
we say:
THERE IS a book on the table.
THERE ARE two boys outside.


IT is often used in English as an impersonal subject:

a) in expressions concerning the weather:
IT is raining hard.
IT was cold last night.

b) in expressions concerning time:
IT is late.
IT was four o'clock when he arrived.

c) in expressions concerning distance:
IT is a long way from here to Paris.
IT is far from here to the restaurant.

d) in expressions followed by an adjective-infinitive construction:
IT IS easy to speak English.
IT WILL BE wonderful to see you again tomorrow.

e) in expressions, such as:
IT IS a pity she is so stupid.
IT IS a shame to behave like that.
