From 1903 through 1919 something called the Ohio Football League existed. That
champion was un-officially recognized as the world champion of professional
football. There was no set schedule, teams played against other teams with no
organization. In 1920 a new league was started, The league was called the
American Professional Football Association (APFA). The APFA changed its
name to the National Football League (NFL) in 1922. The championship title
went to the team with the best regular season record. Official NFL records do
not start until the 1933 season, so the "Pre-NFL" NFL existed
from 1922-1932.
